Pumpernickel

pumpern

My whole life I’ve been told “Pumpernickel” was German for “Devil’s Fart” because the bread was so rough it would cause even the Dark Lord some intestinal distress. It turns out that this assumes “Nickel” was a nickname for the devil, which it may not have been, and not just some poor guy named “Nicholas.” I like to think poor old Farty Nick has been immortalized forever as the second best bread to put corned beef on, but what do I know? 4.1/5
